Kalomira: A Fairytale from Cyprus

-Γαριφαλιά μου πράσινη, πότε θα κοκκινίσεις;
-Που πάτε Καπετάνιο;
-Με παίρνετε κι εμένα;
Σηκώθηκε τότε και τι να δει;
-Που πάεις κορούδα μου, την ερωτούσαν, έτσι μοναχή σου;
-Εμείς της είπαν δουλεύουμε, θα δουλεύεις κι εσύ;

-Τι ωραίο μαξιλάρι! Θα με μάθεις κι εμένα να κεντάω μαξιλάρια;
-Τώρα ξεκουράστηκες καλέ μου ξένε;
-Τώρα ξεκουράστηκες καλέ μου ξένε;

Once upon a time there was a poor couple.From working here and there, they managed to live on some bread, some olives and by doing many prayers. They brought to this world a girl whom they named Kalomira-which means good fortune, in the hope that perhaps her birth would bring a change in the fate of their lives. However, the more they called her Kalomira the more unfortunate the girl became. She saw no fortune and no advancement in her life. She was so unfortunate that even if she could touch gold, it would have turned into soil. She was lazy and unable to do anything. All she did was to talk with flowers, and sing with the birds. Nothing else, neither to work nor even talk about such a thing.
One day a bird came and made fun of her with this song:
-Kalomira, Kalomira
I took everything which is good for you,
Kalomira, Kalomira
start working so that you can find your destiny.
The girl found this song strange but liked it, even though she could not understand what the bird wanted to say to her. One day her Godmother gave her a carnation plant as a present, since the girl loved glowers. She planted it in a beautiful pot and had a great love for this carnation plant. She watered it and spoke to it, she looked after it and sung to it and every day she would ask it:
-My green carnation plant, when will you become red?
Because of her many sweet words and from all that love the plant received, one day the girl saw a red bud from the plant-red like fire. The next day another appeared, and more the day after, and more and more. And the carnation plant became full of colour, full of flowers, it was a joy to look at it! Kalomira full of happiness sat by the window and sung feeling so proud of her carnation plant. One morning, the bird sat by her window and made fun of her again:
-Kalomira, Kalomira
I took everything which is good for you,
Kalomira, Kalomira
start working so that you can to find your destiny.
She liked the song and the bird would say it to her over and over again. After listening to it many times, she thought to herself:
The bird is right, I must find some work to do. But what kind of work, what kind of work... She had an idea.
I will cut a carnation and turn it into a little broom.
So she cut a big carnation and made it into a little broom, a beautiful little broom. She looked at it with pride and thought to herself:
-What should I sweep ... What should I sweep...
I will sweep the sea
so that the boats can pass by.
Excited by the idea, she ran down to the seashore and started working. With that beautiful little broom she swept the sea. She swept, and swept with whim and joy.Full love for both the little broom and the sea and the boats. And the sea became calm with that little broom, with all that love from the girl, and the boats passed by without any problems. However the sea is always the sea and it finds no rest. As long as the girl swept, the sea was calm, but as soon as she stopped sweeping, the sea would become restless, make sea storms and hurricanes. Kalomira became tired of sweeping the sea and fed up with this work. She sat to rest under a tree holding her little broom in her arms. She heard the bird making fun of her again:
-Kalomira, Kalomira
I took everything which is good for you,
-Kalomira, Kalomira
look so you can find your destiny.
It happened that a boat arrived at the port during that time.
Kalomira got up and asked the Captain.
-Where are you going Captain?
-We are going to the Holy Land to pay our respects to the Cross.
-Will you take me also?
-If you know any kind of work, I will take you.
-I have a little broom and when you want I will sweep your boat.
Come on then you and your little broom.
Thus, Kalomira left with that boat. Days came by-days went by, and she could only see the sky and sea, until one day the boat arrived at a port.
-Where are we? Ask the girl.
-At the door of the king, the others told her. And one by one, they started getting off the boat, and going into a fine gateway of a castle, a palace. The girl sat down and looked at the palace feeling mesmerized. Never before until now had she seen such beauty, such speldour. The walls and tiles, the doors and windows, the towers and the balconies, the pots with the flowers ... A miracle! A myth!
The girl admired them over and over again, and the pilgrims got back into the boat to continue their journey and the doors of that great castle closed. What would she do now? From her stupidity and because of her cracked-brain she was left out of the boat. She sat down and started crying, crying without finding any comfort. At some point she heard the familiar bird.It was sitting by a window and it was singing:
-Kalomira, Kalomira
I took everything which is good for you,
Kalomira, Kalomira
get up to find your destiny.
Then she stood up and what did she see? It was not the king, but only three girls. They were sitting and talking to each other in front of the king's palace, surrounded by pots of flowers.
-Hey girl, they asked her, what are you doing all alone there?
-I have been left alone and deserted in the streets.
-Come on, if you want, come with us.
-I am coming. And she went to their house.
-We work here, will you work also?
-I will work as well, I have a little broom and I will sweep your house.
Thus, in this way she entered into the service of the three sisters. The oldest sister was embroidering the sky and the stars on a cloth. When Kalomira saw it, she became mesmerized.
-I also want to embroider the sky.
-You want, but you must closely study with me for a year and you might learn.
-I will study.
Thus, she became an embroidery student.She helped the embroideress and listened to what she told her.She told her stories and theories from around the world.

During the nights the embroideress would take the girl by the hand and would go roaming the sky. From up there they could see the world that passed and the world that would come. They could see the world below and the world of the angels, the world of the sky. There was a whole other world up there and better from the one down on earth. The embroideress told her that this world was the real world, the one down on earth was fake and deceitful.
Time passed and Kalomira went to the second oldest sister. This sister was embroidering the moon. A beautiful moon! A full moon, with its eyes and its eyebrows. It looked as if it was ready to talk to you. Kalomira was mesmerized by it and told her:
-I too would like to embroider the moon.
- Oh, study with me for one year and we will see. Maybe you can learn.
Thus, from that day she became her student. They did embroidery and in oder to pass the time pleasantly, the embroideress told her myths and fables and parables.During the night when the moon come out, they would put the embroidery aside and go out for a walk. Sometimes in the woods, and sometimes to the seashore. In the silence of the night they would look that the moon reflected in lakes and showering the sea with its light, or hiding in the clouds and into the dark wells. So in this way time went by and she spent a year with the second oldest sister and went to third sister, the youngest one. This sister was embroidering a pillow with colorful threads and various shapes and designs.
-What a nice pillow! Will you teach me how to embroider cushions?
I will teach you, stay with me for about a year and maybe you can learn.
So Kalomira stayed with the youngest sister and were embroidering cushions together. As they were doing their embroidering, the youngest sister told the girl poems and songs and they sung and also chanted prayers. Every now and then, they would stop doing embroidery and would both leave and go out into the garden to look after the cabbage and lettuce garden, to pick okra or green beans to cook, or pick fruit and put it in the fruit bowl for the guests. They also went to fetch water from the water spring with a pitcher in order to have water for passers by.
To make long things short, the year finished like this with the third sister, and Kalomira learned the skills and the handiwork of all the three sisters, and their ways of doing things and even their secrets. She learned stories from the first, fairy tales from the second, and songs from the third. One day while Kalomira was at home alone and was embroidering her own cushion, there was a knock on the door and she stood up to open it. Outside stood a handsome young man dressed in fine clothes. He seemed very tired and dazed, maybe from the journey.
-Come on in, the girl said, come inside to rest.
-I am very tired. Do you have some place to stay and rest?
- I have, come inside. She was very happy to see the very fine unexpected guest, and did not know what to offer him first.
-Would you like to hear a true story?
-With great pleasure, said the guest. And Kalomira started to tell him stories and upon her narration, she took him by the hand and got on the wings of the wind and found themselves in the Sky. The guest was mesmerized by what he saw. Kalomira feeling very happy, asked him: -Now do you feel rested my fine guest?
-No, said the guest, no I don't feel rested.
-Sit then, I will tell you a fairytale. And she began to tell him a fairytale. She took him by the hand and they walked the night at the forest and seashore, in the light of the moon. The guest was amazed by what he saw. The girl was delighted and asked again if he felt rested. He replied again:
-No, although all these are all great and good, excellent and wonderful.
-Come on then my fine guest, let me make the table ready and cook you something to eat. The guest ate and leyed on the couch to relax. She put the pillow which she was making under his head. She had embroidered on it all sorts and kinds of flowers, birds, the sky with the stars, the sun and the moon, the mountains with trees, the sea with its fish and with its waves. So she gave him this cushion and the handsome young man leyed to rest. Feeling happy she asked him again:-Do you feel rested my fine guest?
But there was no answer, because as soon as the king put his head on this nice cushion, he sweetly feel asleep. Kalomira was feeling happy and sung this song:

My green carnation plant, when will you turn red
to cut a clove and make it into a little broom,
so I can sweep the sea for the boats to pass.
A boat went to the king's the door
But the King was not there,
there were only three girls.
One was embroidering the sky
the other the moon,
and the third the youngest was embroidering a pillow
so that the King can lay on it and let his dizziness go away.
